Comedian Stephen Colbert thanked the University of Virginia during his speech Saturday at its 2013 valedictory exercises for inviting him to be the keynote speaker, which he took to mean he had been awarded an additional honor. “I believe that means I am this year’s valedictorian, and I am as shocked as you are because I didn’t make it to many classes this year,” Colbert said.

MELBOURNE, Australia — During one of the first lectures we received on Semester at Sea, we were told we would be “using the F word a lot”, which brought some natural chuckles from a room full of college-aged students.

After the laughter subsided, the lecturer told us the F word stood for “flexibility”, and that it was something we were going to have to get good at.

The Semester at Sea program is sponsored by the University of Virginia, and other colleges and universities partner with the school to offer the amazing experience to their students.

Serendipity and Support meets Semester at Sea:

Helen Walters has long been drawn to multifaceted opportunities. Evidence of this can be seen with her choice of studies, the BioResource Research major, which is designed to lead to a career in management, research or outreach. Study abroad, another inherently multifaceted opportunity had been one of her ambitions since high school. Helen also saw study abroad as great preparation for graduate school, especially if related to the ocean, Helen’s primary area of interest.

Semester at Sea student honored as global citizen at Clinton Global Initiative University:

Ask any class of first graders across the country what they want to be when they grow up and they are likely to respond with answers like doctor, fireman and maybe even bus driver.

Many Elon University students have since digressed from their first-grade career paths, but not Emily Tomich.

If you asked Tomich, a sophomore at Elon, what she wants to do now and what she wanted to do when she was 7, the answer would be the same: a world traveler.

As a first grader in California, Tomich’s class participated in a pen pal program called Vicarious Voyage, in which students in her class would write to students on a Semester at Sea program.
